Always Coming, Always Going (2017)

Interactive light installation created by Jared Berghold and Luc Small, exhibited at the Sydney Vivid Light Festival in 2017

Always Coming, Always Going

Always Coming, Always Going is an interactive artwork that explores the relationship between humanity’s sense of wonder and scientific discovery.

The work consists of over 2,000 light-emitting hexagons embedded in 36 interlocking, laser-cut, custom-made panels. Each hexagon comprises nine LEDs, meaning the overall work houses close to 20,000 individually addressable LEDs. 108 custom Arduino PCBs (printed circuit boards) drive the LEDs to deliver imagery at a consistent 60 frames per second. Depth information is captured by two Kinects and used to affect the visuals in real time.

The interactive visuals were developed in C++ and GLSL (OpenGL Shading Language), and were built using the openFrameworks toolkit.

The installation featured inside the Overseas Passenger Terminal at Circular Quay for three weeks during the Sydney Vivid Light Festival in 2017. It was popular with visitors and was seen by over 200,000 people.

I conceptualised, designed and developed the artwork alongside friend and collaborator, Luc Small.
